Samrakshan’s second sterilization center

In recognition of the effectiveness of Samrakshan’s work, a second sterilization facility was handed over to us on May 24, 2005 by the Society for Stray Canine Birth Control. This unit is situated in Ghazipur in East Delhi and will attend to a section of the city which is in dire need of a facility of this nature. We had very little time to prepare the center and were off to a flying start as the municipal authorities in this zone began bringing in dogs immediately. Since this is the only spay/neuter center in this part of Delhi and has a huge dog population, we are greatly pressured by the inflow of dogs. We have, in the last 5 months, sterilized 445 dogs. As you are all aware, Samrakshan has been operating a similar facility in Prahladpur located in North West Delhi for the last two years.

The Ghazipur center still requires considerable improvement in infrastructure and other inputs in order to provide basic facilities to the dogs who are housed for pre and post operative care. We hope, in the days and months to come, we are able to achieve this. We are looking for assistance from our supporters and welcome contributions in cash or in kind. Our immediate needs are for the following:

• Dog Coats – new or used but in good condition
• Geyser in working condition
• New Sacks for the winter for dogs to sit on
• Our recurring needs are oats (dalya), rice, biscuits, pet food and cleaning agents like phenyl, cleaning powders and soaps.

For donations in cash or kind, please contact Sujatha Deane at sujathadeane@yahoo.com or 98-9999-8673. Cheques should be made in the name of Samrakshan Charitable Trust.

New Volunteers

Our volunteer strength is increasing and as always, it is a pleasure to welcome new volunteers to our core team. Amit Sharma is a volunteer at the Ghazipur unit who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Living 10 minutes away from the Ghazipur center, Amit's dream of working closely with an animal welfare organization has finally taken shape. An animal lover who begins his day by feeding a host of dogs and cows near his home, Amit has devoted long hours helping with the initial setting up of the Ghazipur facility.

Vasudha and Vivek Mehta provide support to the Prahladpur center with their regular donations, assistance in emergencies that may crop up and help with supervision at the center. They are also extremely supportive of any new schemes that are proposed and are always game to take them forward, win or lose. Their enthusiasm and support is unmatched. Our work is greatly enhanced with their inclusion in the Samrakshan team.

Volunteer Power

We had planned an operation ‘CleanUp’ at the Prahladpur center in order to remove the thick undergrowth, weeds and shrubbery that had cropped up during the monsoon season. Volunteers showed up in numbers to help with the cleanup at the Prahladpur center on Sunday, November 5th, 2005. Many, many thanks to Dipti, Vasudha, Shikha, Shashank, Vikas, Arjun, Dheeraj, Ravi, Vijay and our staff members, Praveen and Joginder who picked up shovels and got to work.

Thanks to all who brought food and refreshments and helped make a picnic of the day too. Vasudha also followed up on this clean up and brought a couple of gardeners on the next weekend to reinforce the work done. Here are some pictures of the work accomplished.

Donations

Thanks to Vasudha and Vivek who have donated a fridge and gas stove to be used at the Ghazipur center. Our acknowledgements are also due to Jaspreet Arora and Amit Chaudhery who have contributed towards effective functioning of our veterinary units.

We graciously acknowledge donation of a deep freezer by People for Animals. This was desperately sought by us for our Ghazipur center. We wish to thank Mrs. Maneka Gandhi who has made this donation possible.

Samrakshan also received a grant from the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust that will help us better look after the animals that pass through our doors. We wish to thank the trustees of the MAWT for this grant.
